Setup tips for using the Penrose mic with Discord

Please note that although these settings can help, Discord is bandwidth limited, which may affect the overall quality and clarity of your calls based on your system and connection. Poor internet connection speed will adversely affect your mic and call quality.

Windows settings:

To set up your Penrose in Windows so it's automatically chosen in Discord, right click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop and choose "Open Sound Settings" from there, click "Sound Control Panel" from the right hand side.

In your sound control panel, you'll want to right click your Penrose and choose "Set as Default Device" and "Set as Default communications device". You'll want to do the same for the Penrose mic in the "recording" tab. You can verify this is the case by noting that there is only one green circle in the available devices and that it's a check mark. If you see multiple green circles, other devices are set as your Windows defaults and Discord will choose them first. ​

Discord settings:

Since the Penrose mic is fairly sensitive, one of the most important settings to change would be to uncheck "Automatically determine input sensitivity". We've found the sweet spot for the Penrose mic to usually be between -80 and -60dB depending on the speaker and their mic positioning. Input volume should be at maximum and can be adjusted on-the-fly using the mic volume wheel on your headphones as needed.

We usually find that noise suppression is unnecessary for most environments, unless they're particular noisy. This function can subtly reduce the dynamic range possible by the Penrose so we suggest you leave it off unless necessary.

Echo Cancellation and noise reduction should be enabled if needed, as well Automatic gain control.

"Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority" can usually be safely set to off, but may be enabled while using Discord during a particularly bandwidth heavy session to help increase mic clarity. ​

Attenuation will reduce the volume of other applications while you are speaking, or while others are speaking. This is useful for reducing feedback if using an external audio device like speakers to reduce feedback, but is otherwise unnecessary unless desired.
